Freelancing in Nigeria in 2026: Upwork, Fiverr and how to get paid

By the Hawkit New team · · 6 min read

Freelancing in Nigeria works: you sell a skill to clients abroad on Upwork, Fiverr or Freelancer.com, get paid in dollars, and move the money home through Payoneer or a virtual dollar account. The hard part is the first client, and the fees are higher than most people expect.

Below is what each platform charges in 2026, what Upwork Connects really cost, and the cheapest routes for getting dollars into a Nigerian bank.

Can Nigerians get accepted on Upwork and Fiverr?

Yes. Both platforms take Nigerian freelancers, but they screen differently. Upwork reviews every new profile and can decline you, especially in crowded categories like data entry or general virtual assistance. Fiverr lets almost anyone open a seller account, then leaves you to compete for attention once your gig is live.

What gets an Upwork profile approved is boring and specific:

  1. Choose one service, not five. "Shopify store setup for fashion brands" beats "Web developer, writer and graphic designer".
  2. Use a clear photo of your face and your real name, matching your ID.
  3. Write an overview that names the problem you fix and who you fix it for.
  4. Add two or three portfolio pieces. Mock projects are fine if you label them honestly.
  5. Finish identity verification early. A mismatch between your name and your ID is a common reason accounts get stuck.

On Fiverr, the gig itself is your profile. Clear thumbnails, three price tiers and a delivery time you can actually meet matter more than a long bio. One aside: don't buy an "aged" account from someone on Telegram. Both platforms ban accounts that change hands, and you lose whatever is in the balance.

How much do Upwork Connects cost, and what are the fees?

Upwork charges you twice: once to apply, once when you get paid. According to Upwork's own pricing page, Connects cost $0.15 each, sold in bundles like 10 for $1.50 or 80 for $12. A free Basic account gets 10 Connects a month. Freelancer Plus costs $19.99 a month and includes 100.

Each job shows how many Connects a proposal needs, and the number rises for popular or high-budget jobs. Upwork's Connects help page explains how they're spent and when Upwork returns them, for example when a job post is removed.

The second charge is the service fee. Upwork dropped its old 20%/10%/5% sliding scale and now charges a variable fee between 0% and 15% per contract. You see the exact rate before you submit a proposal, and it stays fixed for that contract. Direct contracts carry 5% on Basic and 0% on Plus.

Because your card is charged in dollars, the naira cost of Connects depends on your bank's rate on the day and any foreign-transaction charge it adds. Some Nigerian naira cards still decline dollar payments, which is why many freelancers pay with a virtual dollar card instead.

My opinion: don't buy Freelancer Plus in your first month. Spend your 10 free Connects on jobs posted in the last hour where you match every requirement, and only pay once you know your proposal style gets replies.

Which freelancing platform suits a Nigerian beginner?

It depends on how you like to find work. Upwork rewards people who write sharp proposals. Fiverr rewards people who package a fixed service well and wait for buyers. Freelancer.com runs on bidding and contests. Direct clients cost nothing in fees but take the longest to find.

Fee figures come from Upwork, Fiverr's help centre and Freelancer.com's fees page. Fiverr's 20% applies to tips too, so a $50 order pays you $40.

How do you receive Upwork and Fiverr payments in Nigeria?

Most Nigerian freelancers withdraw to Payoneer first, then either convert to naira and send to a local bank, or keep the dollars. PayPal isn't a practical way to receive money in Nigeria. For clients who pay you directly, virtual dollar accounts from Raenest or Grey are the usual choice.

Here's how the main options compare:

  • Payoneer. Both Upwork and Fiverr support it directly. Fiverr's help centre lists a flat fee per withdrawal (between $1 and $3 depending on whether you use Payoneer's bank transfer or a Payoneer account) plus a minimum amount. Payoneer then applies its own conversion margin if you withdraw in naira, so check the final figure before you confirm.
  • Raenest (formerly Geegpay). It gives you virtual USD, GBP and EUR account details for receiving from clients and platforms. Nairametrics reported that it secured an IMTO licence from the CBN in 2024, and in November 2025 it announced zero deposit fees on the first four deposits each month. Fees have changed since, so read the current schedule in the app.
  • Grey. Similar idea: virtual foreign accounts in the US, UK and EU, popular with people paid through Deel, Wise or direct invoices.
  • Domiciliary account. Your own bank's dollar account. Opening one can mean referees, utility bills and a minimum balance, and incoming wires carry charges. It makes more sense for large, occasional payments than for weekly $40 gigs.

Whatever you use, the exchange rate matters more than the transfer fee. A rate that's a few naira worse per dollar costs you more on a $500 withdrawal than a $3 fee does. Our guide to withdrawing online earnings to a Nigerian bank walks through checking account names and spotting bad rates.

A tax note: from 1 January 2026 Nigeria taxes residents on worldwide income, and freelance earnings count. The first ₦800,000 a year is tax-free under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025. Keep records of what comes in.

What skills sell best for Nigerian freelancers?

The skills that sell are the ones clients abroad pay for repeatedly and can judge from a sample: writing and editing, design, video editing, web and app development, bookkeeping, customer support and social media management. Pick something you can show proof of today, not something you plan to learn.

A few practical notes from watching what gets hired:

  • Narrow wins. "Podcast show notes for business podcasts" gets more replies than "content writer", because the client can picture the result.
  • Time zones are an advantage. West Africa Time matches or sits within an hour of the UK and most of Europe, which suits customer support and admin work for UK and EU businesses.
  • AI changed the bottom of the market. Basic article writing and simple logo work pay less than they did, while editing AI drafts, building automations and prompt-based workflows are growing. Our post on making money with AI in Nigeria covers which of those you can learn quickly.
  • Communication sells as much as skill. Clients rehire people who reply fast, ask good questions and deliver on the date they promised.

If you need small, steady naira income while you wait for your first client, phone-based micro-tasks can cover data and airtime. Hawkit New opens paid social-media tasks on Wednesday 4 November 2026, and pay per task is small, so treat it as data money, not a salary. Our wider guide to making money online in Nigeria compares freelancing with the other options.

Tonight, pick one service you can prove with a sample. Write a single Upwork profile overview or Fiverr gig description for it, set up Payoneer so your payout route is ready, and send your first three proposals to jobs posted in the last hour. Track which ones get replies, and rewrite from there.

Questions

Does Upwork accept Nigerian freelancers?

Yes. Nigerians can sign up and work on Upwork. Upwork reviews every new profile, though, and it does turn some down, usually in crowded categories or when the profile is thin. A specific skill, a real photo, a portfolio and a finished identity check give you the best chance of approval.

How much do Upwork Connects cost in naira?

Upwork prices Connects in dollars: $0.15 each, sold in bundles such as 10 for $1.50. Basic accounts get 10 free a month. Your Nigerian card is charged the dollar amount at your bank's exchange rate, so the naira cost moves with the rate and with any card fees your bank adds.

How much does Fiverr take from Nigerian sellers?

Fiverr keeps 20% of every order, including tips, so a $50 gig pays you $40. Withdrawing then costs a small flat fee per transfer, which Fiverr's help centre lists by payout method. Payoneer or your bank may also take a cut when converting dollars to naira.

What is the best way to receive Upwork or Fiverr money in Nigeria?

Payoneer is the most common route because both platforms support it directly. From Payoneer you can withdraw to a Nigerian bank in naira or move dollars to a USD account. Direct clients often pay into virtual dollar accounts from Raenest or Grey. Compare the rate shown before every withdrawal.

Can a beginner with no experience make money freelancing in Nigeria?

Yes, but expect a slow start. Most beginners spend weeks sending proposals or waiting for a first Fiverr order. Pick one skill you can prove with samples, price a little lower for your first few reviews, and treat the first two or three months as building a track record rather than an income.
