Side hustles for workers in Nigeria (2026 guide)
By the Hawkit New team · · 5 min read
The side hustles that suit workers in Nigeria are the ones you can run in the evenings, at weekends and on your phone in traffic, without breaking your employment contract or wearing yourself out. Freelance services, weekend event work, online selling and small phone-based tasks fit best.
Your salary is your base, so protect it first. Here's how to check what your contract allows, what to do with dead time on the road, and how the 2026 tax rules treat extra income.
Can you run a side hustle without breaching your employment contract?
Usually, yes. Nigerian law doesn't ban moonlighting, but your contract can limit it. A Mondaq analysis by Nigerian lawyers says whether you can take side work depends on the law governing your contract, its terms and company policy, with exclusivity, conflict-of-interest, non-compete and confidentiality clauses doing most of the limiting.
Before you start, check these, in this order:
- Your offer letter and contract. Search for "exclusive", "other employment", "outside business" and "conflict of interest".
- The staff handbook. Banks, oil companies and the civil service may have stricter rules than the contract alone, such as needing written approval for outside business.
- Your employer's clients. Selling services to people you met through work is the fastest way to get into trouble, even if the contract says nothing.
- Company equipment and time. Don't run the hustle on the office laptop, the office Wi-Fi or during work hours. That's misconduct in almost any workplace.
Nigerian courts have been sceptical of very broad restraints. The same Mondaq piece notes the National Industrial Court has struck down covenants that unduly stop employees earning a living. That doesn't make breaking a clause safe, though. Losing your job over a ₦30,000-a-month hustle is a bad trade. If your contract is unclear, ask HR in writing or get a lawyer to read it.
What side hustles can you do on your phone in Lagos traffic?
Phone work that needs short bursts of attention fits the commute best. Customer replies for an online shop, scheduling social posts for small businesses, light video editing, data reselling and paid micro-tasks all work from a bus seat. Lagos was ranked the world's most congested city in a 2025 mid-year traffic index, Nairametrics reported, so that's real time.
Some ideas that fit a danfo, BRT or Uber ride:
- Social media management for small businesses. Write captions, reply to DMs and schedule posts for two or three local brands. Our guide to making money on Instagram covers finding clients.
- Customer support for online sellers. Many Instagram vendors want someone to answer "how much?" messages during the day.
- Data and airtime reselling. Sales take seconds, and coworkers are a ready customer base.
- WhatsApp status adverts and micro-tasks. Small pay, but it suits five-minute gaps. On Hawkit New, which opens tasks on Wednesday 4 November 2026, advertisers set pay of ₦50–₦300 for a WhatsApp status post. Our page on WhatsApp status jobs explains how it works.
If you drive yourself, none of this applies. Use the time for audio courses instead.
Which weekend businesses work for full-time employees?
The best weekend businesses sell to people who buy on Saturdays anyway. Events are the obvious one: Nigerian weddings, birthdays, burials and naming ceremonies happen mostly at weekends, so decoration, photography, MC work, small chops and drinks supply fit your free days rather than fighting them.
| Weekend business | Startup needs | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Event photography or videography | Camera or a good phone, editing skills | Editing eats your weeknights |
| Small chops, cakes and catering to order | Kitchen, packaging, a few trusted clients | Food safety and last-minute orders |
| Event decoration and rentals | Chairs, covers, balloons, transport | Storage space and damaged stock |
| Weekend tutoring | Strong subject knowledge | Parents wanting weekday sessions too |
| Car wash and detailing | Equipment, water, a spot with traffic | Weather and space |
| Selling at weekend markets or online | Stock and a way to deliver | Unsold stock and payment fraud |
Selling online is the easiest to scale beyond the weekend, but it brings fake transfer alerts and delivery headaches. Read our guide to selling online in Nigeria safely before you take your first order.
Freelancing is the other strong option if you have a professional skill. Accountants, designers, writers and developers can take evening work from clients abroad. Our freelancing guide covers Upwork and Fiverr fees and how to get paid.
How do you avoid burning out with a side hustle?
Set a weekly hour limit before you start, and protect sleep and one full day off. My rule of thumb for someone with a full-time job is five to ten hours a week. Beyond that, either the job, the hustle or your health starts to slip, and the job usually pays more.
What helps in practice:
- Pick work with no fixed hours first. A service you deliver by a deadline is easier than a shift you must show up for.
- Batch the work. Two focused evenings beat seven distracted ones.
- Say no to weekday emergencies. Clients who need you at 11am on a Tuesday are clients for a full-timer.
- Review after eight weeks. If it isn't paying more than it costs you in time and transport, change it or stop.
My opinion: the side hustle that wins is usually the boring one closest to your day-job skills. An HR officer writing CVs on weekends will earn sooner than the same person starting a poultry farm.
How is side hustle income taxed in Nigeria from 2026?
Side income is added to your salary and taxed as personal income. Under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, which took effect on 1 January 2026, the first ₦800,000 of annual income is exempt, and rates rise in bands above that. PAYE deducted by your employer only covers your salary, so tax on extra income isn't handled for you.
TechCabal's explainer on the new rules says residents are taxed on worldwide income from 2026, which matters if your side hustle pays in dollars. The Guardian's explainer covers who pays under the new laws.
What I can't give you is a precise figure for your situation, because reliefs like rent relief have been reported differently by different outlets. Do three things:
- Keep a simple record of every payment the hustle receives and what you spend to earn it.
- Make sure you're registered with the tax authority. Reports on the new rules say registration and filing apply even when no tax ends up being due.
- Ask your state internal revenue service, or an accountant, how to file a self-assessment for income outside your salary.
Open your contract and staff handbook tonight and search for the words "exclusive" and "conflict of interest". If they're clear, choose one hustle from this guide that fits five hours a week, block those hours in your calendar, and start a notebook or spreadsheet for every naira it earns from day one.
Questions
Is it legal to have a side hustle while working in Nigeria?
Generally yes. No Nigerian statute bans side work outright. What limits you is your employment contract and company policy, especially clauses on exclusivity, conflicts of interest, confidentiality and competing with your employer. Read your contract and handbook before you start, and keep the hustle away from your employer's clients and data.
Do I pay tax on side hustle income in Nigeria?
Yes, if your total income is above the exempt threshold. Under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, effective 1 January 2026, the first ₦800,000 of annual income is tax-free. Side income is added to your salary, and PAYE only covers the salary, so you may need to file a self-assessment with your state tax office.
What side hustle can I do on my phone in Lagos traffic?
Anything that needs only a phone and short bursts of attention: replying to customers for an online shop, scheduling social posts for clients, editing short videos, reselling data and airtime, and paid social-media micro-tasks. Avoid calls that need concentration if you're driving yourself.
What weekend business can a worker start in Nigeria?
Event services like decoration, photography and small chops, weekend tutoring, car wash and detailing, baking to order and selling at weekend markets all fit Saturdays. Pick one where most customers already buy at weekends, so you aren't fighting for their attention during the week.
How many hours a week should I spend on a side hustle?
There's no right number, but five to ten hours a week is a sensible ceiling for most people with a full-time job. Start at the lower end for the first month and increase only if your day job and health are fine.
